DON'T JUST TAKE OUR WORD FOR IT...
Aaaahmazing!!
The Samurai House and our experience staying there was truly perfect in every way. First, the home was impeccable and had every possible amenity you could imagine. We were a group of 7 and had more than enough room to enjoy our times together, but could also sneak off and read a book or enjoy the scenery in a quiet spot by ourselves. And the view, well, the view….spectacular. The house managers were amazing…they were so lovely and responded to any question we had within about a minute (not kidding)! All in all, we give the house and the experience 12 stars out of 10. Mahalo, Samurai House! We will be back, for sure!!!

Magical!
The pictures do not do this place justice! We saw over 100 whales breaching/spouts right from the property over a week. Whole family of 70+ to 8 week old were comfortable and enjoyed the heated pool, game room, movie theatre and outdoor spaces! Highly recommend a private luau with Chef Sasha. Great interaction with the host.

Fantastic
The experience was fabulous from start to finish - Donna and her husband were so friendly, helpful, and attentive! The kids lived in the pool and we were able to watch the dynamic waves and surfers right from the pool deck - we even had some whale sightings! The location was so convenient between Haleiwa and Waimea Valley and we made multiple visits to both. We have stayed at many rental properties and this was one of the most well appointed and generous homes we have experienced - highly recommend!

Our Story
I was 19 when I first came to Hawaii, my immediate reaction was total amazement. This was the place for me, it was truly paradise. I’ve never wanted to live anywhere else from that time forward. I was smitten by the Hawaiian’s aloha kindness, and laid-back friendly lifestyle. I was able to hang with the locals and even learned some of the customs and dances. I loved the warm air and the magnificent waters surrounding the North Shore of Oahu. I knew that someday, I would move back to Hawaii.
After spending 2 months on the North Shore learning Japanese, I moved to Japan for the next several years. Once again, I found myself in a new and wonderful place. I was enchanted with the Japanese people, culture, and especially the architecture. I would spend hours every day studying the centuries old, all wooden, structures. I especially loved the totally handcrafted buildings. They were fitted together with inter-locking joints, tongue and groove locked in style for endless application, and longevity. It was then that I started my lifelong quest to build a wooden Japanese inspired home on the ocean on North Shore Oahu.
That all happened from 1972-1975. Fast forward to 2006, My wife and I had been blessed with our 4th child and we started our plan of moving to Hawaii in about 5 years. Those plans were changed abruptly once we found out that our newborn had a bad case of eczema, caused by severe environmental allergies. We needed to get him to a moist climate quickly. We were living in Las Vegas at the time, and he wasn’t doing well in that dry climate. We immediately started looking for property on Oahu. We found a small beach house on Kamehameha Highway close to Waimea Bay, North Shore Oahu, right on the Ocean. The property was only 11,000 sq feet, with a small 850 sq.ft. beach house with redwood-single-wall construction, built in 1959. This original house would play a huge part in constructing the current structure of 6,000 sq, ft. I knew we had a huge task ahead, truly clueless to how difficult it was going to be for our dreams to come true.
We designed the house ourselves using a computer program along with a licensed structural engineer. Construction took over 5 yrs, it required many trips to Indonesia to find reusable teak. The do-jo structure is made totally of teak beams. One beam is more than 43 feet long. The total property is made up of 40% re-used teak, 25% re-used redwood 25% cedar, and 10% pine. The foundation is tied 20 ft down into the corral with over 30 concrete pillars reaching 12 feet above ground. The rest of the structure is glass doors and windows. Every room has a balcony and a view of the ocean, except the cinema room. We hired the best subcontractors for the project, they all took an extraordinary interest of going above and beyond to make their part the best it could be. Around the end of 2012 we finally reached our goal, and our vision was finally complete.
We lived across the street in a rental during the beginning stages of construction. After about a year we move into the dojo. Thereafter we would live in different parts of the house until other parts were completed. The master bedroom was built from the top down because according to code, "that part of the house was required to be existing". Carrie and I work on every part of the house, almost every day for over five years. It was very rough at times, but well worth it. We loved our new house and spent the next years making it our home. In 2019 our youngest two boys were reaching junior high and high school age. They were home schooled most of their childhood so now they wanted to go to public school in Utah. We had gone skiing in Utah every year since they were babies, they loved the snow and the four seasons. So, we moved to Utah, and decided rather than the house sit empty for most of the year we would share this magical place with Island travelers.
Enjoy the aloha spirit!
